Srinagar, May 15: Political rhetoric has intensified in Jammu and Kashmir regarding the delayed payments to contractors working under the Jal Jeevan Mission. Iltija Mufti has criticized the government, alleging that payments have been stalled for a long time, putting contractors in financial distress. She accused the administration of negligence and corruption.
Mufti claimed that despite taking loans from banks, contractors have not received payments for two years and urged the government to address their grievances. Meanwhile, protests by contractors continued for the fifth consecutive day.
In a conversation with the media, they expressed their frustration, stating that payments for the Jal Jeevan Mission work have not been disbursed. With the government in power for two years, their dues remain unpaid, leading to significant distress due to debts. The Jammu and Kashmir government has stated that payments will be made after a signed agreement is in place.
Mufti questioned the government’s inaction, noting that despite the ongoing protests, no officials have come to listen to their concerns. She emphasized that they are not there for political gain, but rather to seek resolution for the contractors who have reached out for help.
She further stated that if a scam has occurred, it should be investigated. The contractors have completed their work and are now facing hardships. She criticized the government led by Omar Abdullah, claiming it has failed on multiple fronts, including education, and accused it of corruption while lacking funds for payments.
Mufti concluded by questioning why the government is not addressing the contractors’ issues, suggesting that it has become unresponsive and is failing to function effectively, with corruption permeating all levels of governance.
