Washington, May 7: Republican lawmakers from Texas have appealed to the Trump administration to initiate a federal investigation into alleged H-1B visa fraud in North Texas. They argue that the misuse of this program is harming American workers and undermining trust in the U.S. immigration system.
The appeal was made in a letter addressed to Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Acting Secretary Keith Sonderling, and Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh. The letter, led by Texas Representative Beth Van Duyne, was also signed by Representatives Pat Fallon, Ronny Jackson, and Brandon Gill.
The lawmakers claim that these activities are concentrated in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, specifically in Collin, Dallas, Denton, and Tarrant counties. They wrote, “The presence of these activities in North Texas raises further concerns about local-level abuses of the system. North Texas is a major economic hub for our country.”
They stated, “When the wrong people manipulate visa pathways on a large scale, it distorts the local labor market, depresses wages, and erodes trust in the legal immigration process.”
Van Duyne noted that a recent investigation by independent journalists has revealed false and egregious abuses of the H-1B visa program in North Texas. She expressed gratitude to her colleagues for supporting the call for immediate action from the administration to investigate and prosecute these serious violations of immigration laws.
Van Duyne emphasized, “The misuse of the H-1B visa is an affront to our country. It harms American workers, lowers wages, and leaves university graduates without job prospects in their fields of study. It should be eliminated for economic and national security reasons.”
The lawmakers also referenced previous actions by Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton, who have initiated separate investigations into alleged H-1B abuses and labor displacement practices this year.
They urged federal agencies to conduct a coordinated inter-agency investigation involving employers, third-party agents, and associated institutions. They also called for a review of existing H-1B approval and verification processes to identify any fraudulent job offers, wage discrepancies, or unfair labor conditions.
Additionally, they appealed for stronger enforcement measures, increased audits of H-1B sponsors, and stricter penalties for fraudulent institutions. Their recommendations include better coordination among the Departments of Homeland Security, Labor, and State to enable real-time verification of employment legitimacy and visa compliance.
