Rajasthan Royals have won the toss and opted to field in what is the first game of the season for both teams.
Who is Brijesh Sharma?
An uncapped right-arm pacer from Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir, Brijesh was picked up by Rajasthan Royals for his base price of INR 30 lakhs at the IPL 2026 auction in Abu Dhabi. At the time of his selection, he had not played professional cricket yet, making his call-up a notable bet on potential.
He had, however, impressed in the 2025 Bengal Pro T20 League. Representing Malda Smashers, Brijesh picked up 11 wickets in seven matches and finished among the leading wicket-takers in the competition.
In search of better opportunities, he moved to Bengal and is currently representing the Bengal Cricket Association. His journey has not been straightforward. He was earlier part of the Jammu state setup but was dropped, forcing him to work his way back into contention.
That phase proved important in shaping his progress. Training under coach Deepak Punia at Unique Sports Club in Delhi helped him improve his discipline and better understand the demands of higher-level cricket.
At 27, Brijesh comes from a humble background, with his father working as a labourer. His rise has been supported by family and friends, who stood by him during difficult periods in his career.
Speaking to ANI, Brijesh said, “My journey has had its ups and downs I learnt a great deal about discipline and things I needed to bring to play cricket at a higher level.”
He added, “My father’s hard work has paid off my friends supported me financially and emotionally. They believed in me more than I did.”
Now, in Guwahati, he steps onto the field for the first time in the IPL. It is a big opportunity for the 27-year-old, who will be looking to make an impression in his very first game at this level.
