New Delhi, February 18, 2026 (Udaipur Kiran) – The crescent moon marking the beginning of Ramzan was sighted on Wednesday evening in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, signalling the start of the holy month. The first roza will be observed on Thursday, while Taraweeh prayers will begin in mosques after Isha prayers on Wednesday night.
Ramzan is regarded as a sacred and significant month in Islam. Devotees observe a day-long fast, known as roza, throughout the month. The first ten days are considered the period of Rahmat (mercy). It is believed that sincere worship and fasting during this month lead to forgiveness of sins and fulfilment of prayers.
Muslims across the country will observe roza for a month and dedicate themselves to prayers and devotion. Ramzan holds special importance in Islam as the Holy Quran was revealed during this month. According to Islamic belief, the Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad on the blessed night of Shab-e-Qadr (Lailat-ul-Qadr), making Ramzan a month of ibadat and divine mercy for Muslims worldwide.
Guidelines for Observing Roza
Religious teachings emphasise discipline and purity during fasting. Devotees are advised to wake up around 3:30 am for sehri and complete their meal before the Fajr azaan. Along with daily responsibilities, they are encouraged to focus on offering namaz and reciting the Quran. The fast should be broken at the time of Maghrib azaan in the evening.
Roza is not limited to abstaining from food and water. It also represents self-restraint, purification of the soul and distancing oneself from wrongdoing. Devotees are advised to avoid falsehood, backbiting and breaking promises, as such actions go against the spirit of fasting. Offering help to the needy and promoting peace and harmony in society are also encouraged.
According to Maulana Khalilullah, the month of Ramzan is divided into three Ashras — Rahmat (mercy), Maghfirat (forgiveness) and Nijat from Jahannam (salvation). He said special attention should be given to namaz, recitation of the Quran, durood sharif and tasbeeh, along with helping the underprivileged. He also urged devotees not to show negligence in prayers even after completion of the Quran during Taraweeh, as greater devotion brings greater spiritual reward.
Enthusiasm is visible among people regarding the first roza, and a spiritual atmosphere is being felt in towns with prayers, Taraweeh and acts of charity marking the beginning of the holy month.
