New Delhi, February 18: A female cheetah named Gamini has given birth to three cubs at Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh, increasing the total number of cheetahs in India to 38. This announcement was made by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav on Wednesday.
Expressing his delight on social media platform X, Minister Yadav stated, “Welcoming three new cubs in Kuno marks a new chapter as we celebrate three years since the arrival of cheetahs from South Africa.”
He further noted that this is the ninth successful litter of cubs born on Indian soil, bringing the total number of cubs born in India to 27. With the birth of these new cubs, the cheetah population in India has now reached 38, symbolizing the country’s strong commitment to conservation efforts.
Yadav emphasized, “Every birth strengthens the foundation of the cheetah project and showcases the passion, dedication, and round-the-clock efforts of the field staff and animal teams who have turned this dream into reality. This is a moment of pride for Kuno and India—may Gamini and her three little cubs thrive and advance the story of cheetah revival in the country with speed and grace.”
He added that these tiny ‘sprinters’ born in Kuno are a symbol of the progress in cheetah rehabilitation in India. Experts hope that Gamini and her cubs will remain healthy and give new momentum to the story of cheetah conservation in the country.
This is Gamini’s second litter, further strengthening the conservation efforts at Kuno. With the birth of these cubs, India has recorded its ninth successful delivery of cheetah cubs, raising the number of living cubs born in the country to 27, while the total cheetah population has reached 38.
This achievement is seen as a powerful testament to the historic conservation efforts under ‘Project Cheetah.’ Each new birth not only strengthens the project’s foundation but also reflects the tireless work, dedication, and constant monitoring by the forest department’s field staff and veterinary teams.
