New Delhi: The Indian cricket team faced another setback in the ongoing ODI series against New Zealand as all-rounder Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the remaining two matches. Earlier, Rishabh Pant was also sidelined due to injury.
The first ODI of the series was played on Sunday in Vadodara. During the match, Sundar suffered an injury while bowling. He sustained a side strain, which affected his batting performance as well, causing him difficulty while running between the wickets.
According to sources from the BCCI, Washington Sundar will not be available for the rest of the ODI series. However, official confirmation from the BCCI is still awaited.
The injury to Sundar involves a side strain caused by damage to his left rib area. This injury will keep him out of the remaining two ODIs. There is also uncertainty regarding his availability for the upcoming five-match T20 series against New Zealand, as recovery from a side strain generally takes time.
After the match, captain Shubman Gill stated in a press conference, “Sundar will be taken for a scan, and then we will know the extent of his injury.”
Washington Sundar’s injury further complicates the Indian team’s situation. His absence and the required team changes may impact team selection and strategy. Sundar is also part of the Indian squad selected for the 2026 T20 World Cup.
This is the third injury blow for India in this limited-overs series against New Zealand. Earlier, Rishabh Pant was ruled out due to a side strain, and Tilak Varma missed three T20 matches following groin surgery.
