Chhattisgarh: Over 14 Maoists Killed in Major Security Operation

Raipur/Sukma/Bijapur, 3 January. In one of this year’s largest anti-Naxal operations, security forces killed more than 14 Maoists in two separate encounters in the southern Bastar region of Chhattisgarh, covering Sukma and Bijapur districts.

The main encounter took place in the dense forests of Kistaram area in Sukma district, where joint teams of security personnel were conducting a large search operation based on intelligence inputs. The Maoists opened fire on the forces, leading to intense gunfire exchange lasting several hours.

According to police officials from Sukma and Bijapur, several Maoists were killed in the encounters. Initial reports confirm that over 14 Maoists died in these incidents across the two districts.

Officials stated that most of the killed Maoists belonged to the Darbha Valley Committee (DVCM) cadre, a prominent Maoist group. Notably, the Naxalite commander reportedly involved in the killing of Additional SP Akash Girpunje from Konta was among those killed, dealing a significant blow to the organisation.

Weapons recovered from the site include an AK-47, an INSAS rifle, along with other ammunition and explosives. The operation is still underway, with teams continuing to comb the area.

The exact number and identities of the deceased will be confirmed once the security forces return from the dense forest zones. Considering the sensitive nature of the ongoing anti-Naxal operation, officials have decided not to disclose key details such as the precise location of the gunfight or the number of deployed security personnel.

Speaking to journalists, a senior police officer emphasised that the operation has reached a crucial stage and remains ongoing. For the safety of personnel on the ground, detailed information cannot be shared at this time.

Officials assured that complete details regarding the identities of the killed Maoists, recovered weapons, and the final outcomes will be made public only after the mission concludes and the area is declared secure.

Continuous counter-operations, surrenders, and development initiatives have significantly reduced insurgency. The number of affected districts in Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand has dropped to fewer than 20.

The government aims to eliminate left-wing extremism by 31 March through security camps, infrastructure development, and welfare schemes.

In recent years, many Maoists have either surrendered or been neutralised, weakening their structure. However, underlying issues like tribal displacement and inequality remain, posing challenges to long-term solutions.
