Why Vijay Shankar Will Be an Uncapped Player in IPL 2026 Auction | Udaipur Kiran

New Delhi, 10 December. The mini-auction for Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 is scheduled to take place on 16 December in Abu Dhabi. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has released the list of players who will participate in the auction. According to the board’s list, all-rounder Vijay Shankar will enter the mini-auction as an uncapped player.

You might wonder how Vijay Shankar, who has played for the Indian team, qualifies as an uncapped player. As per BCCI rules, any Indian player who has not played a single match in any format for the national team in the last five years is considered uncapped for the auction. Such players will enter the auction as uncapped players.

Under this rule, Vijay Shankar will be part of the auction as an uncapped player. He has played 12 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 9 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) for India, but his last international appearance was on 27 June 2019, which was more than five years ago. Therefore, the BCCI’s uncapped player rule applies to him.

Vijay Shankar was part of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) last season. The team signed him for Rs 1.2 crore in last year’s mega auction. His performance was modest, scoring only 118 runs in five innings. CSK is planning to build a new team in the mini-auction, which is why they did not retain Vijay Shankar. It will be interesting to see which team acquires this all-rounder in the upcoming auction. Notably, CSK had also retained MS Dhoni under the same rule last season.

Since making his IPL debut in 2014, Vijay Shankar has played 78 matches, scoring 1,233 runs with the help of seven half-centuries. His highest score remains an unbeaten 69. The year 2023 was his best IPL season, where, playing for Gujarat Titans, he scored 301 runs in 14 matches. Additionally, he has taken 9 wickets in the league so far.
