Cold Spells Intensify in Himachal: Plains Colder Than Hills, Yellow Fog Alert Issued | Udaipur Kiran

Shimla, December 10 (Udaipur Kiran) – The cold wave in Himachal Pradesh is intensifying rapidly, with several plains and lower districts experiencing colder nights than the higher mountainous areas. According to the latest minimum temperature data released on Wednesday, the tribal district of Lahaul-Spiti recorded temperatures well below freezing, causing many natural water sources to freeze and icy layers to appear along roads.

The lowest temperature was recorded in Tabo at minus 7.1 degrees Celsius, followed by Kukumseri at minus 5.8 degrees Celsius. Other high-altitude areas also experienced severe cold, with Kalpa in Kinnaur district at 1.8 degrees Celsius and Bajuwara at 2.4 degrees Celsius.

Interestingly, many plains and lower districts of the state reported colder nights than Shimla. While Shimla’s minimum temperature was 9.6 degrees Celsius, Una recorded 5.9 degrees, Kangra 5.5 degrees, Bilaspur 6.1 degrees, Hamirpur 4.2 degrees, and Mandi 4.3 degrees Celsius.

These districts experienced colder nights compared to Shimla. Other places reported minimum temperatures as follows: Palampur 5.0 degrees, Sundernagar 2.9 degrees, Bhuntar 2.4 degrees, Dharamshala 7.4 degrees, Solan 3.4 degrees, Manali 2.7 degrees, Nahan 10.1 degrees, Jubbarhatti 9.8 degrees, Narkanda 4.6 degrees, Bharmour 5.7 degrees, Rekong Peo 3.5 degrees, Paonta Sahib 9.0 degrees, Sarahan 5.1 degrees, Dehra Gopipur 6.0 degrees, and Neri 10.1 degrees Celsius.

The state’s average minimum temperature rose slightly by 0.2 degrees in the past 24 hours. The weather remained completely clear today. However, Bilaspur experienced dense fog in the morning, reducing visibility to 100 meters.

The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for dense fog during mornings and evenings on December 11 and 12 in the lower areas of Bilaspur and Mandi districts. Fog may affect traffic and reduce visibility. The department predicts dry and clear weather across the state until December 13. Light snowfall is expected in the higher mountainous areas on December 14, while the lower and middle mountainous regions will remain clear. Dry weather is also likely in most parts of the state on December 15 and 16.

Meanwhile, residents and tourists in major hill stations such as Shimla, Kufri, and Manali are eagerly awaiting the season’s first snowfall in December. Typically, snowfall begins during the first half of December at these locations, but this year’s dry weather has raised hopes for soon-to-arrive snow. As temperatures continue to drop and nights grow longer, the cold is intensifying even in the plains.
