
New Delhi, November 28 (Udaipur Kiran): A new cyclonic storm named Cyclone Ditwah has formed over the Bay of Bengal and is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall in several southern states over the next few days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The storm is projected to move northwestwards across the Sri Lanka coast and the adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal.
The impact of Cyclone Ditwah is expected to be widespread on November 30, affecting Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The prevailing weather system is likely to cause heavy rainfall till November 30.
As per IMD, the cyclone was moving at a speed of 8 kmph during the past six hours and was centred at 11:30 pm IST on November 27 near latitude 7.9°N and longitude 81.3°E. It was located about 8 km northwest of Batticaloa, 80 km south of Trincomalee, 200 km north-northeast of Hambantota, 480 km south-southeast of Puducherry and 580 km south-southeast of Chennai.
IMD has said that isolated extremely heavy rainfall is likely in Tamil Nadu today and tomorrow. Under the influence of Cyclone Ditwah over the southwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining Sri Lanka coast, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Tamil Nadu from November 27 to 30, with isolated extremely heavy rainfall on November 28 and 29.
The districts of Kanyakumari, Nagapattinam, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Thoothukkudi and Tirunelveli have been placed under orange alert, while Sivaganga, Tenkasi and Virudhunagar are under yellow alert.
Meanwhile, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Rayalaseema are expected to receive isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall till December 2. In Kerala, isolated extremely heavy rainfall is likely on November 30, while isolated heavy rainfall may continue till November 29. Telangana is likely to receive heavy rain on November 30 and December 1, and South Interior Karnataka may face heavy rainfall on November 29.
IMD has also warned that thunderstorms with lightning are very likely over Tamil Nadu from November 27 to December 1, over Kerala and Mahe from November 27 to 29, over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam from November 28 to December 1, and over South Interior Karnataka on November 29 and 30.
