North Western Railway Fully Prepared for Safe Train Operations During Winter Fog | Udaipur Kiran


Jaipur, 18 November (Udaipur Kiran). With winter setting in and dense fog expected across northern India, the North Western Railway (NWR) has strengthened safety measures to ensure smooth and secure train operations. Fog conditions usually affect routes under the Jaipur and Bikaner divisions, prompting the railway to put special protocols in place.

According to NWR Chief Public Relations Officer Shashi Kiran, additional arrangements have been made across engineering, signalling and telecom, electrical, mechanical, operations and safety departments. During a recent review meeting, NWR General Manager Amitabh instructed all departmental heads to maintain extra vigilance throughout the winter months.

1,500 Fog Safety Devices Deployed

To help loco pilots navigate low-visibility routes safely, NWR has equipped all trains running through fog-prone sections with Fog Safety Devices (FSDs). Around 1,500 FSDs are available across the zone, each integrated with GPS mapping of fog-affected routes. Once activated, the device alerts the loco pilot in advance about the distance to upcoming signals, enabling controlled speed and enhanced operational safety.

The Jaipur and Bikaner divisions, being the most fog-affected, use the largest share of these devices.

Additional Safety Measures in Place

  • Safety seminars are being held for staff working in fog-hit sections.

  • Track inspection and repairs—such as welding checks, fishplate maintenance and track renewal—are being prioritised.

  • Detonators (explosive safety signals) are being stocked at stations, level crossings and designated points along fog-prone routes.

  • Signal visibility enhancements, including fresh paint, bright signboards and white-lime highlighting, have been completed.

  • Patrolling frequency has been increased to strengthen track monitoring.

  • Special winter training sessions are being conducted for railway staff, with continuous supervision by inspectors and officers.

NWR reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of passengers during the fog-prone winter season.
