Himalayan Black Bear Pair Brought to Nahargarh Biological Park | Udaipur Kiran

Jaipur, 15 November (Udaipur Kiran). A pair of Himalayan black bears has arrived at Jaipur’s Nahargarh Biological Park from Jumbo Zoo, Jammu & Kashmir, after receiving approval from the Central Zoo Authority. Senior wildlife veterinarian Dr Arvind Mathur and his team transported the animals safely, following all prescribed protocols.

According to officials, the bears were given a complete diet on the first day, including roti, milk, apples and honey. Their transport enclosure was specially designed to prevent stress or shock during the journey, as mandated under the Central Zoo Authority’s wildlife transportation guidelines. Their behaviour, health and feeding were monitored closely throughout the transfer.

The arrival of the Himalayan black bear pair comes nearly nine years after the park last housed this species, making it a new attraction for visitors. Nahargarh Biological Park has already recorded three successful breeding cycles of sloth bears in recent years, with five cubs born for the first time in Rajasthan. Authorities hope the newly arrived Himalayan bears will also breed successfully and support conservation efforts.

Meanwhile, staff from Jammu & Kashmir will return on Sunday under the exchange programme with three female jackals, two female gharials and two female crocodiles for Jumbo Zoo.

Dr Arvind Mathur said the male Himalayan bear is about 2.5 years old, while the female is around 1.75 years old. Both animals will remain in quarantine for three weeks to adapt to the new environment. During this period, they will undergo continuous monitoring, health checks and sample testing. Only after this phase will they be shifted to Enclosure No. 1 for public viewing. Caretakers Surendra Singh and Gopal Meena were part of the transport team.
