New Delhi, November 9 (Udaipur Kiran) — Young Indian opener Abhishek Sharma is on the verge of breaking Virat Kohli’s record for the most T20 International runs by an Indian in a single calendar year. With one series remaining in 2025 against South Africa, Abhishek stands just 26 runs short of surpassing Kohli’s tally.
India will play their final T20I series of the year against South Africa from December 9 in Cuttack, where the 25-year-old left-hander will have the opportunity to rewrite history. Abhishek has so far scored 756 runs in 17 matches at an average of 47.25, also winning the Player of the Series award during India’s recent tour of Australia.
Here’s a look at the top five Indian players with the most T20I runs in a single year:
1. Suryakumar Yadav (2022) – The Indian T20I captain tops the chart with a remarkable 1,164 runs in 31 matches at an average of 46.56. He was also the leading run-scorer across the world that year.
2. Virat Kohli (2022) – The former Indian skipper accumulated 781 runs in 20 matches at an impressive average of 55.78 before retiring from T20Is and Tests.
3. Abhishek Sharma (2025) – With 756 runs in 17 matches, Abhishek is now poised to overtake Kohli’s total. His consistent form and attacking intent have made him one of India’s most promising T20 performers this season.
4. Shikhar Dhawan (2018) – The experienced left-hander scored 689 runs in 18 matches at an average of 40.52, leading the T20I charts globally that year.
5. Rohit Sharma (2022) – The ‘Hitman’ collected 656 runs in 29 matches with an average of 24.29, before retiring from T20Is alongside Kohli.
With Abhishek’s current form, all eyes will be on the South Africa series to see if he can surpass Kohli and become the second-highest Indian run-getter in a T20I calendar year, behind only Suryakumar Yadav.
