India’s Median Mobile Download Speed Surges to 131.77 Mbps in August, Ranks 25th Globally | Udaipur Kiran


New Delhi, September 28 (Udaipur Kiran News) – India’s median mobile download speed soared to 131.77 Mbps in August 2025, marking a remarkable milestone for the country’s digital growth. According to Ookla’s Global Speedtest Index, India now ranks 25th worldwide, climbing two places compared to the previous month.

This achievement highlights India’s rapid progress in mobile network infrastructure, powered by sustained investments from Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, with Vodafone Idea (Vi) also preparing to roll out its 5G network. A few years ago, India’s median mobile download speeds hovered below 20 Mbps, making the current jump a significant leap in connectivity and digital empowerment.

5G Rollouts Driving Mobile Speed Growth

The consistent upgrades in 5G networks and optimisation of infrastructure are the key drivers behind this growth. With Jio and Airtel leading the way, and Vi expected to join soon, users across India are expected to experience even faster mobile internet speeds in the coming months.

Broadband Speeds Lag Behind

While mobile internet speeds are surging, fixed broadband performance still lags. India ranks 98th globally with a median fixed broadband speed of 59.07 Mbps, according to Ookla’s data. Experts say the challenge lies in expanding fibre connectivity, which remains difficult and costly to deploy at scale.

Push for 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA)

To overcome fibre deployment challenges, telecom companies are promoting 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) as a viable alternative. Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel have already launched FWA services, allowing users to enjoy high-speed internet without physical fibre connections.

Vodafone Idea is yet to announce its 5G FWA plans, but analysts believe adopting the technology is crucial for monetising 5G services, especially as most mobile users currently access 5G at no additional cost.

India’s climb in the global mobile speed rankings reflects its ongoing digital transformation, driven by expanding 5G coverage, strategic investments, and rising consumer demand for faster, more reliable internet.
