Brock Purdy injury update: Star QB likely to miss up to five weeks; San Francisco 49ers turn to Mac Jones

The San Francisco 49ers‘ star quarterback, Brock Purdy is likely to miss up to five weeks due to his injury that he sustained in the NFL Week 1 game. The 49ers are facing a challenging start to the 2025 NFL season, with injuries piling up early. After placing tight end George Kittle on injured reserve due to a hamstring issue, the team will now brace for the absence of Purdy.

Brock Purdy’s injury details

Brock Purdy, the 49ers’ starting quarterback, sustained toe and left shoulder injuries during the team’s 17-13 win over the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1. Purdy is dealing with a variant of turf toe, which could sideline him for two to five weeks.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan called Purdy a “long shot” to play in Week 2 against the New Orleans Saints, signaling that the team is preparing to move forward without their star quarterback for multiple games.

In the NFL Week 1 game against the Seahawks, Purdy completed 26 of 35 passes for 277 yards and two touchdowns, despite throwing two interceptions. His absence will leave a significant void for a team with Super Bowl aspirations.

Mac Jones steps up as backup

With Brock Purdy sidelined, the 49ers are turning to backup quarterback Mac Jones, who is set to start against the Saints in Week 2 and potentially beyond.

Jones, a former first-round pick, will bring experience to the role. The Alabama product spent last season with the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he started seven games, posting a 2-5 record with 1,672 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and eight interceptions.

Prior to that, Jones played three seasons with the New England Patriots, earning a Pro Bowl nod as a rookie in 2021 after throwing for 3,801 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions while leading the Patriots to a 10-7 record and a playoff berth.

The 49ers had interest in Jones during the 2021 NFL Draft, considering him for the No. 3 overall pick before selecting Trey Lance.
