Udaipur, Rajasthan – July 25, 2025 A tragic suicide by a final-year student at Pacific Dental College, Bhilon Ka Bedla, has sent shockwaves across India’s academic landscape. Shweta Singh, a final-year BDS student, died by suicide late Thursday night, leaving behind a chilling note exposing alleged mental torture, academic exploitation, and financial extortion by senior faculty members.

Her death has triggered student protests, reignited old legal complaints against the college, and placed the institution’s credibility under intense public scrutiny—once again spotlighting Principal Bhagwan Das, who had been accused of similar misconduct in a previous 2020 legal case.

🧾 The Last Word: “They Ended My Entire Career”

In a heart-rending suicide note, Shweta named Bhagwat Sir and Mahi Ma’am, and accused them of mentally torturing her for two years. She described a toxic climate dominated by:

  • Intentional tests postponding and graduation time to the last limit
  • Mandatory attendance with juniors
  • Falsely flunked students who did not pay bribes
  • A toxic culture in which money, not ability, bought success

“They ruined my career. I can’t take this anymore. They torture kids for money. If you pay, you pass. And if you don’t, they will suck your blood. I’ve reached my limit.”
— Shweta Singh, Suicide Note

⚖️ “If There Is Justice in India…”

Shweta’s note not only narrates the systemic torment but also raises an important plea:

“If India is a country of justice then Bhagwat Sir should be sent to jail as soon as possible… Let him experience a similar torture to that which he imparts to the children.”

She also revealed that students who never appeared in classes were granted passed out certificates in lieu of money, while sincere students were made to re-appear in exams, batches, and even in years.

📣 Campus Erupts in Protest

The following morning (July 25) hundreds of students gathered outside the college premises, protesting against the occurrence of such a terrible crime, and demanding justice as well as the arrest of the college staff members whose names were mentioned in the suicide note. Protesters said they were pressured to leave by college officials and said the administration was more concerned with damage control than with accountability.

Sukher Police Station authorities came to the spot for damage control and informed that investigation of the case was on.

👤 Who Was Shweta Singh?

Shweta, a meritorious student from Jammu’s Muthi locality, is the only daughter of a police constable. Friends and classmates described her as a hardworking and shy student who had lost her luster over the last year with academic pressure. Her family is shattered and is demanding the strictest punishment for the college.

🔙 This Isn’t the First Time: The 2020 Case Against Principal Bhagwan Das

In 2020, a comprehensive legal petition emerged against the same principal Dr. Bhagwan Das, including allegations like:

  • Mental and emotional harassment
  • Unfair academic treatment
  • Demanding bribes for exam results
  • Disregarding students’ medical or compassionate requests

The full text of the legal complaint is published on India Kanoon. However, no administrative step was taken and Bhagwan Das had a free run of the institution.

🔁 A Pattern of Abuse?

The manner of Shweta’s death underscores a deadly cycle:

🧠 Academics & Mental Health in India

Shweta’s story is tragically common. One-quarter of medical/dental students in India experience severe depression (according to a 2024 study published by the Indian Journal of Psychiatry) due to:

  • Academic pressure
  • Harassment by faculty
  • Absence of mental health services in place within institutions

Even so, the overwhelming majority of colleges don’t have grievance cells, mental health counselors, or student safety guidelines.

🔎 Police Investigation Underway

Police have interviewed some faculty and have been inspecting administrative records. No formal charges have been filed, but the investigation is considering every angle—including institutional failure—officers told media.

Students and activists have demanded:

  • Summary dismissal of the above faculty members
  • The accused be booked under IPC Sections 306 (abetment of suicide) and 354 (criminal intimidation)
  • DCI and State Education Authorities intervention

📢 Public Outcry: #JusticeForShweta

Support also poured in through social media with the following hashtags:

  • #JusticeForShweta
  • #ReformDentalEducation
  • #StopAcademicTorture

Alumni and students are offering their own stories of the same exploitation and terror. Many say they were cowed into silence in the past.

🧩 The Bigger Question: How Many More?

Shweta’s death is not an exception; it’s a perfect example of systemic malaise in India’s private medical and dental institutions. Where we have the desire for financial gain, toxic hierarchies, lack of accountability – we find students who suffer in silence, the collateral of the institution crumbling.

This system is due precise accountability this time.

✍️ Final Note

India cannot afford to lose more young shining minds like Shweta. Justice delayed is justice denied. We need action, not just an investigation! And institutions need to be reformed, not swept under the rug.
