India captain Rohit Sharma has not discussed his retirement plan with the Indian team, said vice-captain Shubman Gill a day before the Champions Trophy final. Speaking at the press conference at the Dubai International Stadium on Saturday, Shubman said that the team’s focus is on winning the title, and the captain is also focused on the same.
Rohit Sharma was under intense scrutiny coming into the Champions Trophy after the team’s terrible losses in the Test format of the game. Sharma, who lost two Test series against New Zealand and Australia, had even dropped himself from the final match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy amidst an awful form crisis.
Champions Trophy 2025 | Shubman Gill Press Conference: Updates
With criticism about his fitness levels and returns with the bat, many had argued that the Champions Trophy could be the final chance given to the India captain before the Indian Cricket Board begins a process of transition before the ODI World Cup 2027.
Asked if Rohit Sharma will retire after the final on Sunday, deputy Shubman Gill said that the skipper might take that call after the match.
“We have not discussed it. All the chatter and the discussion are about winning the match. And what we have to do to win the match. He has not spoken to the team about this or to me. I think Rohit is thinking about winning the final as well. I think he is focusing on winning the Champions Trophy first. I think, once the match gets over tomorrow, he will take a call, but I have not heard of this from anyone in the team,” Shubman Gill said at the press conference before the final.
